Woodworking - How to properly stain wood.

Properly applying stain to wood is a simple process and the results can be both rewarding and beautiful if you have the proper tools and instruction.

The first thing you have to determine is what type of wood you are going to stain. Is it hardwood or a softer wood as this will affect the different ways you might apply stain. The other factor is absorption rates as the softer wood types will more readily soak up the stain than its hardwood counterpart and this will affect how much stain you will need and whether or not one coat will be enough.

Next thing to consider if the preparation of the wood. Is it sanded with a fine sandpaper grit or is it a rougher surface. The rough surface will accept the stain more readily and therefore produce a darker shade with less stain. The fine sanded hardwood, on the other hand, will require more stain with repeated application to achieve the same effect.

The tools required for this project will be rubber gloves, a sponge brush, clean rag and of course the desired stain that you will be applying.
