Question by Dick: what specialty tools are there for removing wood screws ?
I am tearing down an old wooden deck and have run into problems with removing the 3″ deck screws. Some come out easily while others tend to round off. I am using a drill/driver with Phillips head blades. I use quite a bit of pressure as I bear down on the screw as I try backing them out, but some just don’t budge! Is there some kind of “easy-out” that I can use to make this less difficult?

A tool called an easy-out is basically a reverse threaded machine screw made of very hard steel that screws down into the stripped head of a screw. It eventually catches in the screw and then starts to extract it.
If enough of the head of the screw is exposed (about 1/4-inch or more), you can use a pair of vise grips to remove the screw. You can also use a chisel to expose enough of the sides of the screw head (about an inch or two in diameter, 1/4 inch deep) and use the vise grips.
